Laboratory Hemostasis

Product Details

  • Paperback: 244 pages
  • Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (April 13, 2007)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0387368388
  • ISBN-13: 978-0387368382

Product Description

Coagulation testing is the basis for the diagnosis of bleeding and thrombotic disorders, as well as the mainstay of anti-coagulant monitoring and management. The laboratory director requires significant expertise to manage the coagulation laboratory. This expertise includes the selection, validation and harmonization of analyzer/reagent combinations across health care organizations that often include physician offices, point of care testing, hospital laboratories and shared core laboratories.
Pathologists are often responsible for managing a healthcare system’s coagulation testing, yet the basics of managing a coagulation laboratory are inadequately addressed in many, if not most, pathology residency training programs. In addition, there is no ****book to which residents or practicing pathologists can refer for assistance. The same can be said for medical technologists or non-pathologist clinicians who find themselves in charge of a coagulation laboratory.
This handbook will address the need among practicing pathologists, laboratory supervisors/managers, pathology trainees and clinicians for a straightforward reference for managing a hemostasis laboratory and coordinating testing across multiple ********s and technologies. The handbook format will allow quick reference to specific topics and be useful for answering specific questions or for Board exam review. The full spectrum of coagulation testing, basics of methodology and instrumentation, and the responsibilities of the laboratory director will be covered.

Manual of Basic Techniques for A Health Laboratory

Product Details

  • Paperback: 393 pages
  • Publisher: World Health Organization; Second edition edition (September 20, 2003)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 9241545305
  • ISBN-13: 978-9241545303

Product Description

This book is a new edition of a very popular laboratory manual published by WHO in the 1980s. The new edition is necessary because of new procedures and technologies developed since the previous edition that have proved useful to small laboratories in developing countries. These new procedures and technologies have been included in the relevant sections of the manual, and some obsolete procedures have been replaced by more up-to-date techniques. The manual provides a practical guide to the safe and accurate performance of basic laboratory techniques. Intended for use by laboratory technicians working in peripheral-level laboratories in developing countries, the book emphasizes simple, economical procedures that can yield accurate results where resources, including equipment, are scarce and the climate is hot and humid.
The book is divided into three parts. The first describes the setting-up of a peripheral health laboratory and general laboratory procedures, including use of a microscope and laboratory balances, centrifugation, measurement and dispensing of liquids, and cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of laboratory equipment. Methods of disposal of laboratory waste, dispatch of specimens to reference laboratories and laboratory safety are also discussed. The second part describes techniques for examining different specimens for helminths, protozoa, bacteria and fungi. Techniques for the preparation, fixation and staining of smears are also discussed. The third and final part describes the examination of urine, cerebrospinal fluid and blood, including techniques based on immunological and serological principles. For each technique, a list of materials and reagents is given, followed by a detailed description of the method and the results of microscopic examination.
Numerous illustrations are used throughout the book to clarify the different steps involved. A summary of the reagents required for the various techniques and their preparation is provided in the annex.

Clinical Studies in Medical Biochemistry

  • Paperback: 392 pages
  • Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA; 3 edition (August 24, 2006)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 019517688X
  • ISBN-13: 978-0195176889

Product Description

This **** uses a case-study approach to present core principles of biochemistry and molecular biology in the con**** of human disease. The thirty-three cases have been carefully chosen to cover key concepts and common diseases. Each chapter provides a specific patient report that includes relevant history, pertinent clinical laboratory data, physical findings, and subsequent diagnosis. This is followed by a comprehensive discussion of normal biochemical processes and reactions pertaining to the case, along with the pathophysiological mechanisms of the disease.

In this third edition of the book, a new co-editor has aided in the substantially revised and more targeted selection of cases. The whole volume is now clearly focused on intermediary ****bolism and other topics central to biochemistry. There are new chapters on topics such as collagen structure, mitochondrial ****bolism, and hyperhomocysteinemia and vascular disease. There is also more coverage of nutritional biochemistry, including new chapters on protein-calorie malnutrition, obesity, vitamin A deficiency, and iron ****bolism.

The best cases were retained from the previous edition, and have been completely rewritten and updated to include recent advances in diagnostic biochemistry and the status of current therapies. Although the first edition was intended primarily for medical students, through the years the book has proven useful for a wide variety of students interested in the health science professions.

Product Description

Platelets are fragments of blood cells that occur in the blood of vertebrates and are associated with blood clotting. Scientists have made great strides in recent years in understanding what stimulates platelets to form blood clots at the molecular level and in developing drugs to inhibit platelet action. Their work has a direct effect on millions of people who deal with cardiovascular disease, strokes, surgery, physical trauma, and other conditions. While references to platelet function have been included in some large ****s, there has not been a basic reference manual that researchers and clinicians can use in their daily work until now.
Platelet Protocols fills the need for a straightforward and comprehensive laboratory manual on current procedures for evaluating and analyzing platelet function and abnormalities. It is an easy-to-read, understandable resource which can be kept at the bench and referred to frequently by scientists, clinicians, and laboratory staff involved in platelet related areas. Topics range from the basics of anticoagulants to the latest developments in platelet testing.
